"Cities
and Telecommunications Video Action Project"
DP/Camera Operator
This documentary dealt
with internet neutrality issues, and the push by new commercial
interests to
alter the power of cities to regulate their own communications environments
and public rights of ways. Interviews were
shot in Washington, D.C. and Portland OR. As DP I
helped develop & execute the 24p look and visual tone of interviews with
producers and facilitated equipment arrangements from city to city.

"The Devil's Oven"
DP/Camera Operator
Documentary on
a coal mine fire set in 1884 by striking
workers that is still burning underground to this day. Interviewed town residents
of New Straitstville Ohio some nearly 100 years old in
recounting the area's unique history. Covered the economic & social impact by shooting in many
remote and in town locations. Captured white aluminum laden waters exiting
out of a coal mine shaft, reclamation efforts, experimental youth programs
and small town turn of the century opera houses all effected by the once prospering coal mining industry in this
remote region of south eastern Ohio.

Cincinnati Art Museum/ WCET
"Discovering the Story"
DP/Camera Operator
High Def documentary for the Cincinnati Art Museum "Freedom
Works" exhibit. Working with
WCET I shot a series of
interviews in the 16:9 format to give a sense of this unique teenaged artist
program and the showcasing of their work in a high profile exhibition.
Several varied locations were tied together with strong color and shadow to
create a lively visual setting for these very enthusiastic key players. The
lighting was completed under a number of critical museum light level
specifications & guidelines. |
State of Kentucky "Tobacco Free Sports: Play Hard
to Win"
DP/Camera Operator
Documentary I helped land with the state of Kentucky. It's
goal was to target the most susceptible demographic to starting smoking,
11-14 year olds. Despite the large tobacco settlement this was a very low budget
production, so we decided to shoot it on a mini-DV Cannon XL. There was no
budget to shoot anywhere around the state except in northern Kentucky so we
found as many diverse locations and sports as we could cramp into the 4 shooting
days. Shot extensive amounts of handheld in sports situations. The video
told totally in teenagers voice is
currently being used in all 55 Kentucky health departments. |

- "Coal Black Voices"
DP/Camera Operator
Coal Black Voices is an hour long documentary two years in
the making which focuses on the poetry of African Americans who grew up in what
is generally perceived a mostly white region. I loved the challenge of creating
visual space to complement, but not distract from the auditory richness of the
poets words. We created a variety of studio environments for the readings. We
purposefully stayed away from the long end of the lens. I used color on
the poets and at times motorized gobos for subtly shifting back-grounds. The
goal was to create an intimate visual feel in an artful context. The program aired
on KET (Kentucky Educational Network) and several regional PBS stations. It's
being marketed abroad and has been sold in France. Check out the
project's
web site for video clips.

Artworks program
six years

- "Head Start Program"
DP/Camera Operator
Documentary on Head Start, it's
benefits, goals to help influence policy makers to continue funding.
Particularly demanding in the sense that 5 year olds are in constant motion.
Shooting requires a steady hand staying with an action long enough for
the magic moments to come.....and enough variety for the editor to work
with. Required lots of floor level composition using the legs as a
mini-crane. Shot with minimal crew on a Hitachi DVC Pro and minimal
lighting. |
The Wallpaper Project
DP/Camera Operator
The
Wallpaper Project was a documentary funded by a grant out of New York to
publicized the incredible local oral history treasures being produced in the
small Ohio town of St. Mary's. Rachel Barber had been diligently collecting
oral histories from residents of Auglaize
county, then each year
creating plays from them with area residents. They were tremendous hits
locally. The documentary's intent was to portray their experience and seek a
2 million dollar grant to create the same in 44 counties state wide
for the Ohio Bicentennial in 2003. The documentary was a success and with
the grant, plays are being held all over Ohio created by this same process.
I so enjoyed working on this doc, seeing how
local oral history can be so
meaningful and connecting for every age group in a community.
All footage was shot on a
mini-DV-Canon XL. We staged the interviews upstairs in the community hall
with a painted oil cloth and seated on the balcony rail of the hundred year
old theater.

The Great Hopewell Road
DP/Camera Operator
for Story telling segment
.
Documentary on a recently discovered 2000 year old perfectly straight 60 mile
long road connecting ancient Hopewell Indian sites in Ohio. Shot the segment on
the story teller as he made an Indian flute in his workshop. Lit the interior of
cabin to give a natural sunlight feel. Also shot B-roll outside of farmers
working oxen as part of the story on how clues were found by early farmers. The
oxen were quite spirited and took off on a run, I got the shot but thanks to the
producer pulling me out of the way by my belt I'm still around to tell about it.
Show aired on a number of PBS stations in a five
state region. Beth Fowler was the DP/Cam on
the rest of the doc. |
