Director of Photography/
Camera Operator
As a Director
of Photography in film & video, I try to provide, in any
situation, several options knowing there is never just one
"right" way to do anything. I work with the
director and producer by first listening. I love to take on
the impossible, but will not hesitate to speak up when I feel
something is not appropriate or too costly time or
money wise to pull off.

My first love is
lighting. For me it's what animates the world. Even the most
beautifully composed shots can be squandered with lighting
handled callously or apathetically. I like to use color and
shadow. I'm at ease working with non-correction color and
carry a wide array of gel material. The term
"party gels" I believe gained popularity in the profession
with gaffers and DP's that were uncomfortable or snobbish about using color
other than CTO's and CTB's. I can recreate styles you've acquired on tape or match scenes that need to be reshot.

As a DP I've worked in every major 'motion' picture format there is
from 35mm, 16mm to 1080&720 high def, DigiBeta, BetaSP, to DVCPro and
Mini-DV. In my non-high def video work I can bring a "film" look to the sharper edged world of
these chip cameras. Working with contrast appropriate to the subject, I like
to light scenes with a wide range of latitude. In many ways video needs more
finesse than film to achieve "the look." With an aesthetic approach, decades
of video experience and a commitment from my clients to approach video with
the same care as a film project, I can deliver images that rival film.
My long experience shooting video esthetically, side by side with film makes
these new waters of high definition 16:9 video comfortable as the high end esthetics of film are merging
with this increased resolution format of video. I know my way around the complex
paint menus of Highdef and can deliver beautiful images as well as assist in
further color correcting/optimizing the image in post as I would in a film transfer session.

choose set and wardrobe colors, do site surveys, and handle
equipment logistics locally and for domestic and
international travel. I carry a full complement of meters and
production related items in my kit.

I work separately
or in combination as a DP/Op. Either way I work closely with
the director in blocking talent, on camera composition and
movement. As a camera operator I operate in 35/16mm film as well as all
formats of video HDTV to mini-DVCam. I know current DigiBeta video
cameras and I'm also working in High Def (Sony
700a & 750, Panasonic AJ-HDC27V) and recently attended a workshop on the Sony 24P HDW-F900 camera.
I've won awards for
my hand-held work. Working out regularly and being physically fit
enables me to compose my handheld work more gracefully & perhaps do more
challenging moves than many others.
